Bourry, Christophe.
Clathrate hydrates are inclusion compounds consisting of an ice-like network of water cages surrounding occluded guest molecules. They occur beneath the oceans and in polar regions, where low temperature and high pressure conditions prevail. Natural gas hydrates, mainly composed of methane occur worldwide and may contain huge natural gas amount, but they can also play an important role in continental slope stability or climate change, due to the potentially enormous "greenhouse" feedback effect of methane. The knowledge of their occurrence in the natural environment, their physical, chemical or thermodynamical properties is essential to prevent geohazards, to anticipate their role in climate change or to develop technologies to take advantage of this...

Experimental study of gas hydrate formation and destabilisation using a novel high-pressure apparatus ArchiMer
Ruffine, Livio; Donval, Jean-pierre; Charlou, Jean-luc; Cremiere, Antoine; Zehnder, B. H..
A novel variable-volume type high-pressure apparatus has been designed, constructed and used for gas hydrate investigations. The apparatus has an operating temperature ranging from 253 K to 473 K and pressure ranging from 0.1 MPa to 60 MPa. Its central component consists of a viewing windows cell to which several sensors or analytical instruments can be connected. At its present configuration, a Raman spectrometer and a gas chromatograph are connected for the study of the liquid (or solid) and the gas phases respectively. The apparatus was used for the study of two different systems. The first system was composed of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water for which the hydrate formation and dissolution has been investigated by injecting water into liquid CO2. The...

Influence of environmental and anthropogenic factors on the composition, concentration and spatial distribution of microplastics: A case study of the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France) ArchiMer
Frere, L.; Paul-pont, I.; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Petton, Sebastien; Jaffre, J; Bihannic, Isabelle; Soudant, P.; Lambert, C.; Huvet, Arnaud.
The concentration and spatial distribution of microplastics in the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France) was investigated in two surveys. Surface water and sediment were sampled at nine locations in areas characterized by contrasting anthropic pressures, riverine influences or water mixing. Microplastics were categorized by their polymer type and size class. Microplastic contamination in surface water and sediment was dominated by polyethylene fragments (PE, 53–67%) followed by polypropylene (PP, 16–30%) and polystyrene (PS, 16–17%) microparticles. The presence of buoyant microplastics (PE, PP and PS) in sediment suggests the existence of physical and/or biological processes leading to vertical transfer of lightweight microplastics in the bay. In sediment (upper...

Investigation of aromatic hydrocarbon inclusion into cyclodextrins by Raman spectroscopy and thermal analysis ArchiMer
Tijunelyte, Inga; Dupont, Nathalie; Milosevic, Irena; Barbey, Carole; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Lidgi-guigui, Nathalie; Guenin, Erwann; De La Chapelle, Marc Lamy.
Among various cavitand molecules, cyclodextrins are extensively studied due to their ability to form host-guest complexes with small hydrophobic molecules. Aiming to explore cyclodextrin implementation on the scopes related to the environmental pollution monitoring or remediation, extensive studies for understanding the cyclodextrin-based host-guest complex formation with selected targeted substances are conducted. In this context, two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, naphthalene and fluoranthene as well as toluene as a member of volatile organic compounds, were studied regarding their ability to encapsulate into cyclodextrin cavities. Synthesised complexes were examined by thermogravimetric analysis combined with Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results...

Mineralogical Evolution of Magnetic Rhodic Oxisols under Different Lithological Influences in Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva Filho,Luiz Aníbal; Ker,João Carlos; Fontes,Maurício Paulo Ferreira; Camêlo,Danilo de Lima; Corrêa,Marcelo Metri; Cavalcante,Luis Carlos Duarte; Guimarães,Luciano de Moura.
ABSTRACT Ferrimagnetic Fe-oxides are important soil components, which are present in most of the agricultural soils of Brazil. Distinction, origin, and assessment of the influence of these minerals on magnetism and geochemistry is a challenge for mineralogists. This study aimed to characterize mineralogically Fe-rich Rhodic Oxisols ( Latossolos Vermelhos ) originating from several mafic rocks in Brazil, and assess the implications on their magnetic and geochemical properties. We present results on magnetic measurements, chemical dissolutions, X-ray diffractometry, Rietveld refinement, Raman, and Mössbauer spectroscopies of Fe-rich Rhodic Oxisols originating from several mafic rocks. They show that magnetite is inherited from the parent material, and its...

Molecular Pathways and Pigments Underlying the Colors of the Pearl Oyster Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingii (Linnaeus 1758) ArchiMer
Stenger, Pierre-louis; Ky, Chin-long; Reisser, Celine; Duboisset, Julien; Dicko, Hamadou; Durand, Patrick; Quintric, Laure; Planes, Serge; Vidal-dupiol, Jeremie.
The shell color of the Mollusca has attracted naturalists and collectors for hundreds of years, while the molecular pathways regulating pigment production and the pigments themselves remain poorly described. In this study, our aim was to identify the main pigments and their molecular pathways in the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera—the species displaying the broadest range of colors. Three inner shell colors were investigated—red, yellow, and green. To maximize phenotypic homogeneity, a controlled population approach combined with common garden conditioning was used. Comparative analysis of transcriptomes (RNA-seq) of P. margaritifera with different shell colors revealed the central role of the heme pathway, which is involved in the production of red...

Physicochemical and Biological Investigation of Different Structures of Carbon Coatings Deposited onto Polyurethane BABT
Kaczorowski,Witold; Batory,Damian; Jakubowski,Witold; Szymanski,Witold; Komorowski,Piotr; Walkowiak,Bogdan; Sanak,Marek; Niedzielski,Piotr.
The aim of this study was to examine the thrombogenic properties of polyurethane that was surface modified with carbon coatings. Physicochemical properties of manufactured coatings were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and contact angle measurement methods. Samples were examined by the Impact-R method evaluating the level of platelets activation and adhesion of particular blood cell elements. The analysis of antimicrobial resistance against E. coli colonization and viability of endothelial cells showed that polyurethane modified with use of carbon layers constituted an interesting solution for biomedical application.

Structural analysis of RF sputtered Ge-Sb-Se thin films by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies ArchiMer
Baudet, E.; Cardinaud, C.; Girard, A.; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Michel, K.; Bureau, B.; Nazabal, V..
Chalcogenide thin films (GeSe2)100 − x(Sb2Se3)x (with x = 10 and 50) were deposited by Radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. In order to study the impact of Ar pressure on the structure and the composition of selenide thin films structural properties of thin films and targets were investigated by means of Raman scattering spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Under low pressure (5 · 10− 3 mbar), the increase of wrong bonds like Ge(Sb)-Ge(Sb) was confirmed by Raman and also XPS for both composition. The observed structural changes with Ar pressure are linked with modification of the composition of the selenide films analyzed by EDS and XPS. Furthermore for higher Ar pressure (5 · 10− 2 mbar), RF sputtered thin film and target...
